What is leap year?

A year in which an extra day is added to the Gregorian calendar used by most of the world. An ordinary year has 365 days, a leap year has 366 days. A leap year comes once every four years and can always be evenly divided by four.

The reason for a leap year is because it takes the earth approximately 365.25 days to revolve around the sun and to make sure that a calendar year is the same as a tropical year (the period of earth's revolution), there needs to be an extra day added every 4 years.
